Vera Zvonareva

Vera Zvonareva
Shvedova won, Glatch lost, Pivovarova won, Olaru lost and Australia thinks it has found the new Neale Frasier.

Safina beat the Kuz to win Toyko and Zvonareva beat Peng to win Guangzhou. The all Russian celebrations were spoiled by the men who fell to Argentina in the David Cup fifth match. Exactly why they chose to play Andreev instead of Tursunov is not known but it cost them the tie after Davydenko’s heroic efforts against Nalbandian. Del Potro thrashed Andreev to put them into the final against Spain. Maybe Tarpischev isn’t flawless after all.

Spain ended US hopes (faint as they were) when Nadal took care of Roddick (bagel included) to put his country through to the final. Even with a strained buttock muscle (no pics please) he was too good for Roddick. “I’m not that good of a clay-courter,” said the latter. Indeed.
