Fernando Verdasco in Brisbane

Fernando Verdasco
Ana Ivanovic tossed the ball all over the place looking for a win against Roberta Vinci in Brisbane before finally flouncing home. Ivanovic’s Boyfriend Verdasco Apparently he dislikes being described as Ana's boyfriend, so tournament organisers are now describing him as “Davis Cup hero” Verdasco. Hmm, I don’t recall seeing Feliciano Lopez in Brisbane. The Davis Cup hero dealt with Ancic while Gulbis found that Mathieu was no Djokovic trying out a new racquet and was bundled out on what was rapidly becoming French day on Pat Rafter Arena. Coin and Mauresmo battled there for over three hours and while Coin looks better the more we see of her, Mauresmo doesn’t and had little to rely on besides experience in handling everything the Lucky Loser threw at her. Coin takes the ball quite late and hit the corners regularly leaving Mauresmo playing startled defence. She probably won’t be able to do the same against Ivanovic if the latter can find her ball-toss.

Also Karatantcheva’s run ended and Errani’s continued. Berdych lost and Tsonga tried everything to lose but still managed to hold on against the surprising Nieminen. French day you see.

Peer got protested, Dementieva beat Erakovic and Pavlyuchenkova lost in Auckland, while Blake beat Kiefer, Lisicki beat Shaughnessy and the Safin siblings were victorious in the Hopman hit-and-giggle.

I was there court side and came to fully understand the business of tennis when Tsonga beat Niemenen. Tsonga was totally outclassed in the first set, but his popularity with the crowd because of his personality on court got 99% of the crowd's chants directed his way and I swear that's what lifted his game and got him over the line. The committed and accomplished Niemenen, on the other hand, has failed to utilise the power of personality on court, relying purely on his many tennis talents - his undoing on this day. Skippy, Brisbane
