Kirilenko out of Brisbane

Kirilenko practising in Brisbane
Murray beat Nadal in the glorified exo in Abu Dhabi, I’m sure it doesn’t mean anything. Safina and big bro won in the Hopman hit-and-giggle. Luckily Marat won the fight against whoever gave him that black eye – hate to see if he lost...

In Brisbane Groenefeld, Karatantcheva, Vinci and Czink qualified and Lucky Loser Coin took Sugiyama’s spot as Sugiyama was booted up to 8th seed replacing Kirilenko who looked in fine form practising the day before (see pic right) but apparently has a viral infection. Sugiyama must be spitting because she was drawn to play a qualifier and now she gets Stosur. The organisers played games with the order of play for tomorrow, first announcing that Holland would play Safarova on centre court, sorry Pat Rafter Arena, then deciding that Stosur took precedence and booting the young Aussie Holland. Methinks there may have been a call from Channel 7 in-between as they will actually televise some tennis if they can fit it around the soaps. Don’t tell them but Lleyton Hewitt’s playing Hopman tomorrow on another channel and all the Stosur in the world is not going to save them.

The much hyped Ana Ivanovic plays Monday night but can’t get on Australian TV because she’s not Australian. She’ll play Kvitova but it doesn’t matter because we all know that the match of the round is between Dokic and Mauresmo.

Also in Brisbane Gasquet won, Dent won, Querrey lost, Gajdosova won, Azarenka won, Groth won, Anderson won, Muller won, Isner lost, Gabashvili won, Bartoli dined out on Wejnert and Guccione took Stosur’s place to open Pat Rafter’s Arena and promptly flamed out in the first round of qualifying and unconsciously vindicating the decision not to give him a wildcard. Let’s assume he’s not happy. The men’s qualifiers who did win face having to play two matches tomorrow.

Not entirely sure anything happened in Auckland. Coco Vandeweghe got the call to join the expensive girls in Hong Kong.
