Caroline Wozniacki walloped Melanie South in Sydney, a bit like yesterday’s thumping of should-be-contender Dominika Cibulkova, though South is not in her class and only advanced thanks to Bartoli’s withdrawal. Gajdosova lost to Dementieva which presumably makes her Slovakian again. We can look forward to both Gajdosova and Rodionova being honorary Aussies for the Australian Open at least until they lose. Gajdosova will marry Aussie Sam Groth after the Open but still won’t be cleared to represent Australia for another 12 months.

Bondarenko lost, Benesova won, Mathieu won, Safina won, Nishikori lost, Gulbis won, both Radwanksas won, Serena destroyed Errani and Marat Safin may be injured.

Skimpy tops to be banned in Melbourne after complaints about Cornet in Perth.

Adam Helfant got the nod to pander to player egos, fend off tournament lawsuits and foster the growth of tennis in the midst of global financial turmoil. Here’s hoping Nadal likes him.

Meanwhile almost forgotten former No 1 Roger Federer took aim at the women’s game and Jelena Jankovic recently saying that he hoped the pride of Scotland Andy Murray would earn his Number One ranking by winning a Major, not like that silly women’s tour where pushers like Jankovic could become number one without a Major. Poor Roger, still he is the last Major winner and will probably prove all the doubters wrong again in Melbourne.

Mary Pierce has retired.
