Marion Bartoli defeated Jelena Jankovic

Marion Bartoli
Not sure if Jankovic will remain number one after the Aus Open but she certainly gave her critics more ammunition if she does continue to lead the women despite her Majorless career. Thanks Marion Bartoli for giving us all a dose of reality. Bartoli’s either a great player on her day or a slow, lumbering two-fisted ball-basher. Wonder which she will be against the suddenly sublime Zvonareva?

The Jelena Dokic fairytale continues, but just how many forehands can you dump in the net and still win? Luckily for her Kleybanova got awfully tight at the right moments. Next up for the little Serbian Aussie battler is Safina who should be also thanking her favourite deity after Cornet’s meltdown allowed her through. At 5-2 up in the third the seemingly indestructible Cornet served for the match twice and lost five games in a row to end the match sobbing in her chair. Sometime tennis is beyond cruel. Though apparently Cornet’s now recovered enough to sit in Baghdatis’ box and cheer him on.

Roddick continues his stealth run, Federer craves the limelight so much that he hands a two set head-start to headcase Berdych just so that he can get a mention in the press after his “comeback”. Del Potro beat Cilic and women’s night matches are headed for the scrapheap after poor Marcos Baghdatis gets no sleep again after Dokic / Kleybanova went for three hours. Bet someone from channel Seven in Australia gets straight on the phone to insist on an exemption for Dokic’s next match though.

Caroline Wozniacki riding a Harley – maybe she should have been practising…

Maria Sharapova photoshoot. She might be too injured to play but really her fans deserve something so she’ll bravely dress up in silly clothes and get her photo taken just for them. What a trouper. Get your shoulder healed Maria, you belong on court.
