Rafael Nadal beat Gilles Simon

Rafael Nadal
Verdasco took out Tsonga like a man who knows he’s finally arrived and would like someone to point out the finish line to him. Was it the big match experience of D-Cup that changed Fernando Verdasco and turned him into the (almost) complete product? Or was it the celebrity pairing with a certain burnout dollette and the intense media devotion that followed. Maybe if you can survive that – and it appears Ivanovic couldn’t – then you can survive anything on a tennis court. The real test is to come when he does battle (and we do mean battle) with another Spaniard who’s got a game.

Rafael Nadal eased past Simon and is looking awesome. Of course now that he’s ditched the pirate gear the way he looks is subjective to one’s appreciation of pirates. He still picks at his trousers though and surely it can’t be long before millions of adoring kids are doing the same. Perhaps a product placement isn’t too far away.

Elena the (almost) Great Dementieva whipped Suarez Navarro in oppressively hot conditions. Svetlana Kuznetsova didn’t mind the heat however and was annoyed when they closed the roof and allowed Serena Williams back into the game. Serena will play Dementieva in a match which should provide the tournament winner. Don’t tell the other Russians though, they think their match tomorrow will count for something. Also tomorrow Federer gets to beat Roddick again.

Ivanovic's problems started before she and Verdasco.
