Serena and Safina battling for number one and title

Elena Dementieva won’t be taking Jelena Jankovic’s number one ranking after her loss to Serena Williams, now either Dinara Safina or Serena Williams will be number one if they win the title.

Serena is still on track for her every-second-year-I-lose Australian Open record and dismantled Elena the (almost) Great’s game in the shade that she prefers. Dementieva must be wondering if she will ever get a Major to match her Olympic gold. Hint she may be running out of chances. Anyway headcases are always more interesting to watch, even if they have fixed up their serve somewhat. (Has her serve actually improved – one is always told that it is but today she rained double-faults.)

Sulky Vera Zvonareva challenged calls – including on match point – to no use and flounced out the Aus Open. At least she didn’t cry (though she probably is now). Is it a choke when you serve for the set and are broken to love? Can Dinara Safina get close to Serena on Saturday? She may possibly have the crowd on her side, something that won’t please Serena.

Vojislava Lukic, who you’ve probably never heard of but is an up-and-coming star, is appearing in Serbian FHM.

The powerhouse US Fed Cup team to battle Dulko and co will be the starstudded lineup of Bethanie Mattek, Jill Craybas, Melanie Oudin and Liezel Huber. Well at least they will win the doubles. Although as Argentina has only Dulko that may be enough to get them through to a later tie that either of the Williams sisters may feel like playing.
