Serena Williams is number one

Dinara Safina
Serena kicked some Russian ass and added some more bling to her trophy cabinet – probably needs a new wing by now – and consigned Safina to the realm of deer-in-the-headlights bunnies. Second time for Dinara Safina and she still has acres of improvement to make on the biggest stages. Safina couldn't win a point on second serve as a brutal Serena Williams aggressively destroyed her chances, bageling her in the first and never letting her settle in the second. Maybe Safina will need that case of vodka to drown her sorrows.

Serena Williams now is officially number one again, dethroning the Majorless Jankovic and is a worthy holder of the title. Long may she reign over the women’s’ tennis game. Or at least until Roland Garros.

Tomorrow we see the latest instalment of tennis’ greatest rivalry and the first since the epic Wimbledon final. Will Nadal resume his dominance of the greatest player of all time or will Federer pick up where he left off in New York and clean up again? Either way it should be essential viewing. Turn off the phone and sit back to watch – cause even if it’s a straight sets beating you want to say that you saw it (and it might be good to watch).
