Vera Zvonareva wins Indian Wells

 Vera Zvonareva
Vera Zvonareva beat Ana Ivanovic to win Indian Wells and make a major breakthrough for the former crybaby who’s now developing some real maturity. In a typical womens’ tennis break-fest the lead changed several times in the first set and Ivanovic had set points but the always underrated Zvonareva fought back to force a tie break and ultimately take the set. Ivanovic started the second well with a break but then wilted to lose six games straight. Last year’s champion will presumably lose all her remaining confidence and start refocusing on all her promotional activities that have plagued her tennis since becoming a bona-fide star at Roland Garros last year.

Zvonareva also teamed with beaten semi-finalist Azarenka to win the doubles and moves to number 5 in the rankings. Is she actually a Major contender now? We’ll have to wait till Miami and the return of the Williams sisters to see…
