Sharapova saves Tokyo

Maria Sharapova
Sasha Jones beat Alicia Molik in Darwin and later won the final to announce her arrival and put a minor dent in Molik’s confidence.

Pavlyuchenkova beat Venus in Tokyo and Safina crumbled to Chang. It was left to Sharapova to restore the tournaments organisers’ confidence as she recovered to overcome Schiavone. Sugiyama retired before Petrova. Rybarikova beat Radwanska the Lesser and then Petrova, Hantuchova wasted no time against Craybas, Bondarenko the Greater started on fire against Dushevina before burning up. Dushevina then crashed to Li Na proving she’d learned nothing.

Bondarenko the Lesser (who may soon overtake Bondarenko the Greater) cruised against ALG, Stosur topped Glatch, Zheng beat Mirza, Petkovic upset the Kuz, Benesova scored a bagel against Razzano, Date-Krumm fell back down to earth and Radwanska the Greater beat Makarova. Kleybanova beat Bepa, Vesnina Vinci and Bartoli crushed Rezai.

Dent, Evans and Baghdatis won in Malaysia and Arguello beat Lopez. Bellucci and Isner won in Bangkok, Bolelli got married and Querrey cut his arm.
