Everybody’s hero, Nikolay Davydenko, showed again that he finally means business taking out last year’s crowd favourite Fernando Verdasco in lots of sets. He’ll play the winner of Fed vs Hewitt which should be TMF although if Hewitt has a chance of upsetting about 14 awful losses in a row it will be in Australia with a raucously partisan crowd behind him and a ferocious self-belief churning him onwards. You get the feeling that Hewitt would trade both his Majors for a decent shot at this title. Probably won’t be enough to get him over the line though.
In fact with Stosur lining up for her obligatory beating from Serena tonight this will probably be the last chance for the local broadcaster to wrap themselves in Aussie flags and reminisce about when Australia ruled the tennis world – look it up it did happen!
