Caroline Wozniacki crashes out

Caroline Wozniacki
The Woz proves again that she’s still a pretender not a contender as she managed to lose to Li Na in Melbourne. The inevitable sponsors circus will have to wait. She’s only really broken through at last year’s US Open where the draw opened up for her and whenever she has had a chance to prove herself she has faltered. The suggestions that her high ranking is due to overplaying could be a concern as now that she’s a top ten player she will be restricted in the number of Mickey Mouse tournaments she can play. She can ask her good friend Agnieszka Radwanksa about this.

Everybody’s hero, Nikolay Davydenko, showed again that he finally means business taking out last year’s crowd favourite Fernando Verdasco in lots of sets. He’ll play the winner of Fed vs Hewitt which should be TMF although if Hewitt has a chance of upsetting about 14 awful losses in a row it will be in Australia with a raucously partisan crowd behind him and a ferocious self-belief churning him onwards. You get the feeling that Hewitt would trade both his Majors for a decent shot at this title. Probably won’t be enough to get him over the line though.

In fact with Stosur lining up for her obligatory beating from Serena tonight this will probably be the last chance for the local broadcaster to wrap themselves in Aussie flags and reminisce about when Australia ruled the tennis world – look it up it did happen!
