Fed Cup round one 2010

Germany Fed CupRussia topped Serbia in the big clash with Jankovic standing tall and Ivanovic crashing as usual. Then they teamed together to be creamed in the deciding doubles. As Jankovic said they are both singles only players – what do you expect? Russia gets to beat the US next.

The USA rather surprisingly thumped France in an all no-star affair. The Williams sisters were a no show and Rezai and Bartoli continued their dispute with team officials. This left Cornet, Coin and Parmentier to do battle with Oudin and Mattek-Sands. Since Cornet is a sobbing wreck whenever she’s on international duties this doesn’t seem quite fair, but no doubt Escude will have Aravane Rezai’s number on speed dial before the next play-off. The USA won three-nil before the usual dead substitutions.

Alona Bondarenko looked great pulverising Francesca Schiavone for the Ukraine. Turns out it would be the only match they would win as the officially awesome Flavia Pennetta knocked them down.

The Czechs beat Germany – exactly how I’m not sure but Lucie Hradecka’s name was mentioned. This almost certainly means it was a fluke but you never know. Poor Petkovic lost both her singles matches.

Stosur beat Spain, despite the messes Dellacqua and Molik made on court.

Poland lost to Wickmayer - imagine the Polish captain’s delight. We’ve got both Radwanska sisters and neither Henin or Clijsters can be bothered playing. How can we lose? Oh ok, they have Wickmayer, but no - Flipkens?

The Slovaks Hantuchova and Cibulkova beat China three-nil before substitutions and Estonia beat Argentina. Argentina please go and hang your head.
