The Regina Kulikova enigma

Regina KulikovaRegina Kulikova finally lost in Dubai after a tournament almost as good as Shahar Peer’s. The qualifier who beat Mirza, Voegele and Kuznetsova before losing to Radwanska, looks like she’s grown up a lot since I saw her play in Melbourne last month. Then she lost to Strycova in a bad-tempered, rain-affected match over several days where she swapped insults and refused to shake her opponent’s hand when she finally lost. Several times she called Strycova something and immediately Strycova complained to the umpire that Kulikova was calling her a bitch. Kulikova claimed she was only saying “stupid”. Either way it didn’t help her play and she lost in a heap. Now she’s coming back from almost certain defeat against the Kuz and fighting back well in all her matches. Headcases are so much more interesting to watch aren’t they?

Meanwhile the Shahar Peer story rolls on, although it will have to continue on the outside courts despite Venus Williams’ presence - for safety concerns. Considering the royal family manages to watch on centre court, how dangerous can it be? No doubt the tournament organisers will be hoping for a Venus victory, let’s hope for Peer just to see whether they’ll schedule the final on an outside court. Azarenka should demolish Radwanska the Elder in the other Semi - so she probably won’t.

Sharapova seems unstoppable in Memphis. Can we hope for a Zahlavova / Zakapalova final for Bogata?

Roddick finally got to play his first round match against Blake in Memphis. He won of course. Sorry James. Then he had to back up to beat Lu. Nalbandian should win Buenos Aires? If he doesn’t retire hurt.

Tom Tebbutt notes who’s not playing Davis Cup. (hint it’s a lot)
