The Rampaging Ana Ivanovic

STANFORD, CA - JULY 26: Ana Ivanovic of Serbia looks on against Alisa Kleybanova of Russia during Day 1 of the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford University on July 26, 2010 in Stanford, California. (Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images)
Good to see the possibly reborn Ana Ivanovic crush her nemesis Kleybanova and finally make a move back to redemption - or prepare to crush her fans' dreams yet again. She'll play Bartoli in a swat-a-thon later today. Sharapova, Kirilenko and Vika already swept through joining Dementieva, Stosur, Wickmayer and Radwanska the Greater in the quarters. We're already out of Americans though with the last, Oudin, now gone. But to be fair there were few locals entered and WCs were mainly given to top players (and Ana) instead of possibly decent locals.

Forty Deuce even more essential reading then usual from Stanford. Can we ask her why there's no TV coverage?

Larsson dominated a slumping Cirstea in Istanbul and still managed to lose, Rybarikova got Pavlyuchenkovaed, Groth and Rodionova continued their post-immigratory success and Schiavone wallowed in her post-Major slump. See Sam - it could be worse.

Querrey and Lopez won in LA, Gulbis lost and a bunch of people played in Gstaad. Good for them.

Jelena Dokic continues her fight for a Get Fit book deal by playing a 75K in Bucharest. She beat qualifier Jurak in 3 sets. She'll play Thorpe next in the next round.

Jelena Dokic wins something!

Jelena DokicJelena Dokic is finally back and playing and actually winning a tournament even if it's just a $50K event in Contrexeville, France. She beat Olivia Sanchez in the final. Dokic is now ranked 114 in the world and needs to improve before the US Open to avoid qualifying. (She also needs to play some tournaments)

Radek Stepanek and Nicole Vaidisova got married

Tignor slams Wertheim on Serena: "Maybe he pushed the envelope on this a little because it was a cover story. Or maybe this is what it takes to get tennis onto the cover of SI in the first place. Or maybe he just believes it."

Nicole Vaidisova gets her worm. Hope Radek makes up for her lost tennis career. Let's wish them well anyway.

Monfils versus Montanes in Stuttgart - can Gael stuff this one up? Strycova and Szavay in Prague - let's say Strycova but they're both in hot form. Soderling versus Almagro in Baastad is easy for Robin. Pennetta against Kanepi in Palermo - should be straightforward for Flavia but we've said this before...

Former No 1 Ana Ivanovic will play qualifying at Montreal - presumedly there are some talentless juniors who need a wildcard more than a former champion.

Rafa and stuff

So Rafa won Wimbledon and then pulled out of Davis Cup because well, they don't need him. Turns out they did but there's a World Cup on so....

Henin pulled out of the Battle of Belgium and was replaced by some American who can play a bit.

Rezai and Szavay picked up some silverware in Mickey Mouse tournaments that we won't remember the names of (but they will).

They was some dodgy betting (or playing) again.
Alona Bondarenko got marriedNalbandian came back and destroyed Russia. Serbia ousted Croatia, Fish won some oldies tournament, oh and Alona Bondarenko got married. Don't you just love a traditional ceremony? That's her coach btw.

Anna Kournikova and Martina Hingis

Anna Kournikova and Martina HingisAnna KournikovaAnna Kournikova and Martina Hingis played some hit-and-giggle match that was surprisingly well-covered and demonstrated that they are still, er, well they demonstrated something and it was worth seeing apparently. And that's good for tennis. And apparently they are both interested or not interested in a comeback. So that clears that up.

Now can we clean-up Jennifer Capriati for some meaningless exo in New York?

Serena as usual

Serena WilliamsSo Serena Williams wiped the floor with Bepa - at least she was gracious about it afterwards. And Vera can hold her head up partially high. She didn't smash any racquets or tear up until it was all over. And we can finally stop talking about how Wimbledon is Venus' tournament. It's not, it's Serena's. She can have any of them she wants.

Seriously Zvonareva did play well. It's just that it didn't matter. Don't you hate that?

Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez hit the beachFernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez hit the beach to console themselves for being typical Spaniards and unable to play on grass - unlike that Rafa who shows everyone up. I'm sure there'll be a TV set somewhere there in case they want to tune in for the final.
